For students to truly be successful in their math classes, they must know how to dissect a problem so that it makes sense to them. The new common core math standards include eight standards for mathematical practice. For example, the first, "Make sense of problems and persevere in solving them" requires students to read a problem and then understand what they are being asked to do. Further, our new standards require students to communicate mathematics, both orally and on paper. The literacy strategies we have learned will allow me to assist students in learning to understand how to make sense of problems. Cassie Crowder
The new common core state standards are calling for more integration than ever. I have always implemented a lot of literacy strategies into my classes (no matter the content. I think that the strategies will continue to help by helping the students in their thought processes.
With the new state standards, all subjects are required to implement literacy strategies to help teach reading and writing. The more literacy strategies we have available, the easier this will be to implement. Some literacy strategies work best in certain content areas, so the more you have, the easier it will be to plan effective lessons.
Since all teachers are required to implement literacy skills in their content areas, the more literacy strategies that are available will make it much easier for us to choose which ones are most effective for us to implement as we adjust to the new common core standards. As we all begin with new standards, the literacy ideas we choose to integrate at the start will allow us to "break in" these new literacy strategies and make them a permanent part of our methodology in teaching our new curriculum. I believe that our knowledge of literacy strategies should be a great help in planning out lessons as we prepare for new units in our new curriculum. Adam Kennington
The new standards are requiring literacy skills to be implemented across all curriculums. This is going to give students a way to connect reading to all subject areas even the ones they find more appealing than reading/ELA. This will help build their ability in reading.
The more literacy strategies we use across all subject areas will help to improve overall student success. The new standards will be very challenging for all involved and the literacy strategies we use will enable us to better accommodate and differentiate for all learning styles.
The knowledge of literacy strategies that we have been developing these past few years will be a great benefit when we start Common Core and Essential standards next year. It calls for these to be integrated and that is exactly what we have already been doing here at East. Its not a easy task to learn and understand a whole new curriculum so at least we are prepared in the area of literacy.
The knowledge of literacy strategies that we have been learning I feel will be a great asset when it comes to teaching the new Common Core standards. When your approach is being centered more on the process than the answer we will have to find new ways to engage our students. I feel many of the strategies we have learned about will aid in this movement.
I will be able to use more literacy strategies in my new SCS. I will be doing more art history. This will allow me to use some of the things we have been shown.
As a language arts teacher, I always use some type of literacy strategy with each lesson or unit that I plan. As we move toward more integration of subjects and technology in our classrooms, the strategies we have been provided will require every student to look at the connections in literacy in each classroom. I am always excited when I find out students have already used a type of graphic organizer in another curriculum area that I am using. It reinforces connections in learning and provides students the ability to apply critical thinking skills learned from the strategies in any situation.
I should be able to incorperate literacy into parts of my units that I have been unable to in the past. We have been givin many ideas on how literacy can be included. I will not be able to use them all in a computer lab class setting, but the ones I can use should give the students more opportunitys to use literacy in my lab.
Literacy offers practical strategies and approaches that teachers can use to improve students' ability to read, write, and speak in the content areas. A strong vocabulary emphasis facilitates the deep understanding critical for literacy success up through the grades and into the students college and career.
The literacy strategies that have been brought to my attention over the years will help greatly when incorporating them along with the new Common Core Standards/Essential Standards. Literacy carries through each content area as Melina mentioned above. With the strategies that have been provided I can now find unique ways of teaching students.
In band, the new standards are a more organized way of getting from one level to the next. Literacy strategies will be helpful in dicovering different learning styles while exploring vocabulary and history of music.
Using the literacy strategies engages students and get them "thinking" not just going through the motions. This is what our new common core/essential standards curriculum revolves around.
Literacy strategies help me to feel confident as I go into this new curriculum. I have found them to be successful when using them in previous lessons. Students are engaged when using them. They help to organize their thoughts, and most importantly to think. They are a nice bag of tricks to have in hand when approaching these new core standards.
By using the literacy strategies that we have been presented, I hopefully will be able to engage students more in the lesson. The strategies will help me, hopefully, get students thinking more about what they are doing and how it applies to daily life.
The literacy strategies will help give me ideas of how I can engage my students in the learning process. The new curriculum wants students to discover the info. This will help. Teresa
I feel that the literacy strategies we have learned over the years will help me successfully implement my new standards. I feel that we are more prepared than others because we have had literacy training. Mandy Barriger
Some of the literacy strategies will help me to assess my students quicker and better. I feel I am one up on some of my other educators because I have wonderful examples and explanations to go along with the strategies themselves.

I use a simple rubric in the weight room that allows the students to assess each other.
